To make sure you get the best value from your existing health insurance plan there are a several things you can do to make sure the bills get paid. Here are 3 strategies you can take to get the best results between your plan and your provider.
First, examine the copy of the explanation of benefits (EOB) that your insurer sends to you.
Your EOB will include a statement of the services you received. Make sure to review it for accuracy.
Second, if you think the EOB is not accurate, notify your provider.
Because of the coding systems used, sometimes the information on the bill may appear inaccurate, but actually translate into the closest possible way to describe your treatment through the coding system. However, in some cases, a short chat with the provider’s office staff will reveal a mistake and the staff can then correct it and resubmit the bill.
Third, if, after you speak with your provider, you still determine that the bill is inaccurate, notify your insurer of your concern.
If you can use e-mail and copy the appropriate individuals from both the provider and the insurer, this will be the best way to make sure that you have covered all of your bases. It’s also a good idea to follow up with a phone call to make sure the intended recipients received the e-mail.
Keep these nine strategies in mind to make sure your bills are paid in a timely manner. Doing this could mean less headaches for your doctor, your health plan, and most important of all, for you.
