Question: Will my insurance cover a naturopathic doctor?
From: Howard F.
Answer: As someone who follows a raw food diet, I am also fascinated by alternative medicine. Many raw food leaders were trained as Naturopathic Doctors (NDs). In my new book, The Raw Food Diet Myth, I discuss the philosophies of alternative and complementary medicine and specifically address some modalities. Very Briefly, Naturopathy is a school of medical philosophy and practice that focuses on improving health and treating disease chiefly by assisting the body’s own ability to recuperate from illness and injury. Some practices may use conventional medicine along with naturopathic medicine. NDs are trained in conventional medical sciences, diagnosis, and treatment and are experts in natural treatments as well. Licensing varies by states but currently, 14 states license NDs. Please refer to my book for more details about the six principles of Naturopathic Medicine. You may also visit my website, www.rawfoodmyth.com for more information.
An increasing number of insurance companies and managed care organizations are covering alternative modalities. Some of the major companies covering some forms include Aetna, Medicare, Prudential, Kaiser-Permanente. The most commonly covered modalities are chiropractic medicine, massage therapy, and acupuncture. But fueled by consumer demand, more are beginning to cover herbal remedies, homeopathy, stress management, and meditation although on a limited basis. Currently, however, most consumers pay privately. Contact your insurance company to determine if you have benefits. Also check with your Health Savings Account (HSA) or flexible spending account as a possibility.
