Meditation

yoga_by_the_ocean_small.jpg
Meditation describes a state of concentrated attention, self-inquiry, and increased awareness. It usually involves turning the attention inward to a single point of reference, like breathing. Meditation is recognized as a component of most Eastern religions, where it has been practiced for over 5,000 years. During his address to the Millenium World Peace Summit at the United Nations, S. N. Goenka, the Vipassana Acharya, called meditation a nonsectarian remedy to a universal problem.

Meditation is a path to inner peace. Peace and harmony, however, cannot coexist with negativity, mental corruption, or impurity. You use meditation to quiet your mind and allow the negativity, corruption, and
impurities to dissolve. You quiet your mind by observing your thoughts. If you observe negativity or other unsettling thoughts in your mind, they lose their strength and fade away. The more you practice observing without losing your mental balance, the easier it will be to maintain your balance when you face stress, negativity, or change.

Raw and Living Food Theory

smallpear.jpgA theory is a system of ideas or statements explaining something. Raw and living food theory claims that uncooked food produces greater health benefits than cooked food. Based on its history, leaders, and the current documented practices, the following six concepts appear to be the principles of the raw food or living nutrition theory.

  1. Eat food that is alive with its enzymes still intact.
  2. Eat food that is fresh and organic
  3. Eat vegan food, no animal products
  4. You reflect the vibration, or energy level, of what you eat
  5. Juice some percentage of your fruits and vegetables regularly
  6. Follow food-combining rules .

While we wait for studies to be conducted at some point in the future, we can read, analyze, and possibly even try out some of the principles of the raw food theory in our own lives. I overheard a conversation recently about raw food.  A man was describing the raw food diet to his companion.  His explanation contained many of the six principles listed below.  His friend responded, “it sounds like just another diet fad to me.”  The man (who was not a raw foodist), responded, “Maybe, but when you think about it, how can something that is fresh, organic and good for you be a fad?”

Details of each concept are addressed in my upcoming book The Raw Food Diet Myth.

The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods by pulling together all of the components, including, but not limited to, diet, into one place. The book provides you with information to make a conscious decision about whether you will, or perhaps already have, incorporated any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living.

RawFoodMyth.com

rawfooddietmyth-small.jpg

We launched the website for my new book, The Raw Food Diet Myth, today. While it is a great resource for learning more about the raw and living food lifestyle, anyone can pick up some good tips about healthy living from the site. The website contains great resources, the basics of raw food preparation and the lifestyle. The book is due out on June 15th but you can download a free sample chapter from the site at http://www.rawfoodmyth.com/about/preview.php.

On the site, I describe a grass roots movement for raw and living foods and the things we all can do to enjoy greater well-being. The top 10 things each of us can do are:
1. Eat some greens everyday
2. Eat less meat, or none at all
3. Eat no refined sugar or products containing refined sugar
4. Jump on a rebounder 20 minutes a day or practice yoga daily
5. Fast once or twice a year from food or media
6. Look up the pH level of the 10 most common foods you eat and eliminate anything with a pH level less than 6
7. Drink only bottled water from artesian wells (like Fiji)
8. Eliminate dairy or only use raw dairy products
9. Meditate 20 minutes a week
10. Pick one super supplement to add to your daily regimen: bee pollen, blue-green algae, chlorella or spirulina as one of your daily supplements

Please visit the site and let us know what you think!

Healthcare Prognosis 2008

I recently had the chance to speak at the Healthcare Prognosis 2008 hosted by the Main Line Chamber of Commerce at Bryn Mawr Hospital. The event was attended by many local providers and area business leaders and focused on how organizations can improve the healthcare of their employees and how that can actually reduce the cost of health benefits. After the panel, was finished there was a lively discussion regarding personal health planning and how a proactive approach to healthcare can dramatically increase the overall health levels of a community.

In many ways this event may have raised more questions than answers for the attendees. However, it introduced many new ideas to an important group of business and community leaders, which is crucial to effecting real long-term changes.

Medicalization of Life

The phrase, medicalization of life refers to "society’s growing trend to classify more and more life problems as medical problems" and treating those problems with pharmaceutical or surgical intervention. There is a spectrum of medicalization issues that includes those a physician may treat with prescription medication and surgery to those that are cosmetic in nature. Many advertisements describe how to treat problems like restless leg syndrome, sexual dysfunction, and insomnia with a prescription drug and physician visit. These are examples of the medicalization of life today that 20 years ago we did not even have a medical diagnosis for. At the extreme, medicalization involves treating natural life consequences, such as minor body image issues, being slightly overweight, or experiencing hair loss as diseases that must be eradicated.

Medicalization involves asking questions, such as:

  • When does a deviation from normal need medical intervention?
  • Does every episode of depression or attention deficit require a medical intervention?
  • What are appropriate alternative treatments?

On one end of the medicalization spectrum, an individual may be experiencing anxiety or depression. To the extent that any condition interferes with a person's ability to function effectively on a day-to-day basis, it is important to treat it. Physicians have professional judgment parameters in applying clinical criteria. If you choose to seek medical intervention for such a condition, your physician may recommend treatment with prescription drugs. You make the decision.

At the other end of the medicalization spectrum are conditions like wrinkles, hair loss or yellow, crooked teeth. If you have any of these conditions, you need to discern for yourself whether you need, want, or can afford medical or surgical intervention for problems like these. Whether you choose to seek medical intervention for a natural consequence of living may not be as important as how you do it. We count on our physicians to act ethically and in our best interests when making decision about when and if to treat a symptom, a condition or a "common life consequence."

The Sugar Blues

In 1975, William Dufty, wrote the book Sugar Blues. The book was inspired by Dufty’s withdrawal from a significant sugar addiction in the 1960’s. Interestingly, Dr. Otto Warburg’s finding of a causal link between sugar and cancer in 1931 is not even mentioned by Dufty. This probably has less to do with Dufty’s skills as a researcher and more to do with mainstream media’s ability to bury stories that create the wrong kind of controversy.

In Sugar Blues, Dufty describes the history of refined sugar in our diets dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. He provides some good evidence that the known dangers of eating refined sugar date back to 1664, when diabetes was first identified by Thomas Willis, a physician in England. Willis documented the relationship between excess sugar in the urine and the likelihood of developing diabetes. But because the King’s largest business at the time was importing refined sugar, Willis did not share this information publicly. A wise move for a 17th century physician who wanted to avoid being banished. Today, we still find many of our dietary choices being driven by government policy, some of which may be to benefit industry and not the citizen.

Healthcare Spending

Question: How much money is spent on healthcare related expenses in the US each year?
From: Locke D. of Seattle, WA

Answer: Healthcare in the U.S. comprises about 16% of the gross domestic product (GDP) according to the National Coalition on Health Care. In 2005, healthcare spending reached $2 trillion. Unfortunately, despite these expenditures, about 15% of the U.S. population lacks or has inadequate healthcare insurance. It is no wonder that this is one of the major platforms in the presidential race.
